Firefights have broken out in central Baghdad between the Iraqi security forces and Sunni fighters belonging to the “Awakening Council” militia, following the arrest of popular militia leader Adel Mashhadani by the al-Maliki government.

The move to crack down on the Sunni militia – which was originally recruited by the American and Iraqi governments to drive al Qaeda out of Baghdad, Diyala and Anbar – follows complaints by the fighters that insufficient efforts have been made to incorporate them into Iraq’s security forces.

The arrest of Mashhadani is likely aimed at removing him from contention before the upcoming elections, and could quickly unravel the shaky truce between the Iraqi government and Sunni insurgents that has been widely credited to the “Surge” strategy attributed to General Petraeus. Another possible consequence could be the return of a full fledged Sunni insurgency against the U.S. occupation – which could then potentially be used as a pretext for backpedaling on promises to begin withdrawing combat forces.
