Ron Paul: We killed a million Iraqis

The conservatives attending this week’s Conservative Political Action Conference are generally hawkish when it comes to foreign policy, but they applauded Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) on Friday when he told them the US has no choice but to get out of Iraq.
"Part of the reasons why we lost this last election was the foreign policy issue," Paul insisted. "Generally speaking, the presidential candidate who argues the case for less war-mongering will win the election."
Paul noted that George Bush ran in 2000 on a pledge to end Bill Clinton’s nation-building, but then he "joined the idea that the American taxpayers — you — have an obligation to take care of everybody and police the world."
"This is literally what bankrupts the country," Paul complained. "It costs us a trillion dollars a year to take care of our foreign policy, and that cannot last."
"The person most pleased with our foreign policy is Osama bin Laden," Paul went on. "He said, ‘I’m going to get you to come over here and we’ll fight you on our sand, and we will do what we did to the Soviets.’ … He said he will do the same thing, he will eventually bankrupt this country."
"So yeah," Paul acknowledged. "We want to get rid of a bad guy in Iraq — we did. But … another one million Iraqis got killed. Believe me, they weren’t all terrorists. … But nevertheless, it pleased Osama bin Laden."
Paul concluded by criticizing President Obama for proposing to send another 17,000 troops to Afghanistan. "Don’t we know anything about history?" he asked. "It is bankrupting our country. It will end … because we can’t afford it. … That’s what the financial crisis is telling us. … and the sooner we realize that the better."

U.S. To Leave Residual Force Of 50,000 In Iraq After “Pullout”
As Naomi Klein reminded us, Obama does not have a plan to end the Iraq war. What Obama has in a plan to downsize the occupation. He plans to leave the Green Zone, the symbol of the U.S. occupation, intact. Doing so requires a significant troop presence, and means the continuation of the occupation of Iraq.

ALF & ELF Attacks Against Industries Increase
The original title of this article is “Extremist attacks on global food chain increase,” when in reality it is industrial agriculture that is attacking the diversity and stability of the global food chain, and the ELF and ALF that are acting in defense of it. Of course, it is not surprising that an industry mouthpiece would confuse the global food chain with industry itself. The biodiversity of nature houses the true global food chain, not industry or agriculture.
“Extremists” claimed responsibility for the liberation of thousands of animals during the year and millions of dollars in damage. Mexico appears to be an emerging center for animal-rights “terrorism.” In 2008, “extremist” groups in Mexico claimed more than double the amount of attacks than were claimed in the United States.

Gaza Rockets Target Israeli Town
Since the declaration of the ceasefire on January 18th, the area in and around the Gaza Strip has experienced anything but peace. More than 100 rockets have been fired from the Strip as Israel retaliates daily with air strikes.
On the receiving end of Gaza’s Kassam missiles lies the city of Ashkelon, which on February 28th suffered a missile attack that damaged a school. No injuries were reported.

Revealed: Scientific evidence for the 2001 anthrax attacks
This article briefly describes the forensic trail followed by the scientists that analyzed the notorious white powder that helped convince Americans they were under sustained terrorist attack. The Justice Department was about to charge their designated suspect, Bruce Ivins, for the crime, when he suddenly committed suicide. This raised a lot of eyebrows and led to cries of a cover up. The fact that the attacks were immediately (and under totally false pretenses) linked to Iraq by mainstream media figures provides a suspiciously obvious motive.
Now the plot thickens, as the newly released results do not necessarily implicate Ivins. The attack anthrax did originate from a vial in Ivins’ lab, but it had been recultured, and several samples existed outside his lab.
Next the team developed highly sensitive tests to screen all 1072 samples for four of the mutations. Eight samples had all four. One came from a flask labelled RMR-1029 that Ivins was responsible for at USAMRIID. The other seven came from cultures taken from that flask, only one of which was not located at USAMRIID. So while these findings show the attack spores came from one of these cultures, the FBI has gone further in concluding the attack came directly from the RMR-1029 flask.

Six Years After Iraq Invasion, Obama Sets Out his Exit Plan
In a long-awaited announcement, U.S. President Barack Obama has outlined his administration’s policy on American withdrawal from Iraq. After weeks of wrangling with the Pentagon’s top brass, Obama has reached a compromise that appears to be generally based on the Status of Forces Agreement reached between Bush’s negotiators and the Iraqi parliament last November.
The plan calls for a withdrawal of “all combat forces” from Iraq by August of 2010, after which time a “residual force” of 50,000 troops would remain to offer support to Iraqi security forces. These 50,000 troops would be out of Iraq by 2011 – as per the agreement outlined in the U.S./Iraqi SOFA.
While Bush-era holdover Robert Gates was quick to point out to reporters that the plan could allow for U.S. troops to stay in Iraq beyond this point, he noted that this would be dependent on a request from the Iraqi government – something that is not likely to happen, barring a U.S.-sponsored coup d’etat. Gates is a notable member of a group – along with Generals Petraeus and Odierno – that has argued virulently against what they conceive to be an “overly hasty” American withdrawal.
